The Hawaii Department of Health’s Food and Drug Branch has issued an alert regarding an expanded voluntary recall of products by Quaker Oats Company. The recall now includes an additional granola bar snack called the Quaker Chewy Dipps Llama Rama. This action has been taken due to potential Salmonella contamination.
The Quaker Chewy Dipps Llama Rama granola bar snack is sold nationwide, including in Hawaii. This announcement comes after the Quaker Oats Company initially announced a voluntary recall in mid-December for their granola bar and granola cereal products, also due to salmonella concerns. A month later, the company, which is owned by PepsiCo, expanded the recall to include two dozen more types of granola bars, cereals, and snack foods due to possible salmonella contamination.
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause various symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. In rare cases, Salmonella can lead to more serious conditions such as arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. It is important to note that children, older adults, and individuals with compromised immune conditions are at a greater risk of developing serious and sometimes fatal Salmonella infections.
The Hawaii Department of Health urges anyone who has consumed the recalled product and is experiencing symptoms to contact their healthcare provider. The Food and Drug Branch advises consumers to check the list of recalled products provided and dispose of or return them.
