In a shocking incident captured on video, a district court judge in Clark County, Nevada, was attacked by a felon during a sentencing hearing. The incident occurred as Judge Mary Kay Holthus was sentencing Deobra Redden on a charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm.
The video shows Redden’s attorney requesting probation for his client, to which Judge Holthus responded, “I think it’s time he got a taste of something else.” Suddenly, outside the frame of the video, Redden can be heard yelling expletives before lunging over the judge’s bench and landing directly on top of her, causing her to fall to the floor.
Both Judge Holthus and a court marshal who intervened to protect her sustained injuries in the attack. They have been transported to the hospital, and their conditions are being monitored. The marshal is reported to be in stable condition.
As a result of this incident, Redden now faces additional charges, including one count of battery on a protected person resulting in substantial bodily harm, two counts of battery on a protected person, and one additional count of battery. He is expected to appear in court on Thursday to face these new charges.
This shocking attack highlights the potential dangers faced by judges and court personnel in the course of their duties. It serves as a reminder of the importance of courtroom security and the need to ensure the safety of all those involved in the administration of justice.
