Algae Bloom Disperses, Clearing Torquay Front Beach for Swimming

A blue green algae bloom that had prompted warnings for people not to swim at Torquay front beach has now dispersed. The Department of Environment detected the presence of algae in the waters off Cosy Corner on Friday, which led to a health advice alert being issued. The alert remained in effect for much of Sunday as temperatures soared into the 30’s.

Authorities had cautioned people about the potential risks of coming into contact with the algae or swallowing contaminated water. Blue green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can produce toxins that may cause reactions in humans and animals.

However, the recent dispersal of the algae bloom has now cleared Torquay front beach for swimming. With the algae no longer present, beachgoers can enjoy the waters without the risk of exposure to harmful toxins.

It is important to note that blue green algae blooms can occur naturally in bodies of water, particularly during warm weather conditions. These blooms are often triggered by an excess of nutrients in the water, such as phosphorus and nitrogen, which can come from sources like agricultural runoff and wastewater.

Authorities will continue to monitor the water quality at Torquay front beach to ensure the safety of beachgoers. Visitors are advised to follow any further updates or warnings from the Department of Environment regarding the water conditions.
