Mpox Epidemic Overview
According to the latest reports from the African Union’s health agency, more than 1,100 people across Africa have died from mpox this year. This alarming situation prompts urgent discussions on the need for effective interventions. Since January, the continent has reported approximately 42,000 cases of this disease, signaling a rapid escalation that health officials warn is ‘going out of control.’
Geographical Impact and New Cases
Recent updates reveal that mpox has spread to new regions, with cases officially confirmed in Zambia and Zimbabwe for the first time this year. This brings the total number of African countries affected by mpox to 18. The Democratic Republic of Congo remains the epicenter of the outbreak, having launched a vaccination drive earlier this month to combat the rising number of infections.
Call for Immediate Action
Jean Kaseya, head of the Africa CDC, emphasizes the necessity for immediate action, stating, “Mpox is going out of control if we don’t act.” He urges international partners to prioritize the release of funds previously pledged for combating mpox. As new cases continue to emerge week after week, it is critical for both local authorities and global partners to collaborate effectively in addressing this public health crisis.
